The investments made into the export industry began to produce good results from the late nineties. The main export market for fresh produce was and continues to be the European Union (EU) in terms of exports. Fresh vegetables, fruit and flowers are exported to the United Kingdom, Holland, Germany and France. South Africa also offers a small market for both fresh vegetables and cut flowers.
In the 2014 marketing season, Zambian-grown table grapes started to enter the South African market for the first time. The table below shows the production figures relating to exports of fresh produce and the value of exports between 1998 and 2006. It will be noted that during the period under consideration, production and exports peaked to about 12,000 tonnes of fresh produce per year between 2001 and 2003. During this period, the industry directly employed more than 15,000 workers with gross export earnings averaging over US$ 50 million per year.
